Dr. Hassan Ashmawy – The Motivating Issues

The idea came to mind the mind of Dr. Hassan Ashmawy (Founding President) to establish a medical service under an Islamic name. Motivated by people who needed help due to suffering. He felt duty bound to assist the community in any way possible. The thought of a medical service offered under the umbrella of Islam was mooted.

a. STEPS TAKEN BY THE FOUNDING PRESIDENT
The president invited all medical professions to his home for the first meeting
Conducted a brainstorming session with a vision of establishing a hospital

a. Building a clinic at Lobengula Masjid in Bulawayo
b. A place readily built

  1. BENCHMARKING
    a. Dr. Hassan Ashmawy and Dr. Cherifa Sururu visited churches running charity clinics in order to see how they conducted their business.
    b. Studied Islamic Medical Association of South Africa (IMASA) mode of operation.
  2. NOVEMBER 2006 – SETTLED ON PREMISES
    a. Discovered Industrial Clinic business was on sale excluding the building.
    b. The clinic was functional and had staff.
    c. The clinic had equipment for testing hearing, eyesight, and lungs.
    d. The asking price for the clinic equivalent to in Zimbabwean dollars was US$50,000.00
    e. By Allah’s grace, the owners asked for only a Zimbabwean Dollar 9,000,000.00 equivalent to US 3,000.00. This amount was so difficult to raise.
    f. President was willing to make full donation himself but his idea was to make it a Muslim community project and not a personal one. He contributed Z$ 3,000,000.00
    g. Discovered that a constitution, as well as an executive committee, was necessary to open a bank account.
    h. A constitution was drafted; several meetings were held. IMASA constitution guided the group during the meetings.
    i. The constitution was reviewed by IMAZ’s legal advisor Mr. Moosa Foroma from Harare.

The clinic premises were and are still being rented from the HMA Esat trust in Bulawayo.

a. The President visited the individual person’s Homes and Businesses for donations towards the clinic.
b. Majority of Muslims were generous and supportive.
c. Money was raised and payment was done.
d. The president was inspired when he finally saw that the sign, which carried the Islamic Medical Association, had Health and Safety Clinic been installed at Al Shifa Clinic.
